Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has raised concerns over the growing political influence of Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, claiming that President William Ruto could be using political strategies to weaken and divide the opposition ahead of the 2027 General Election.
In remarks attributed to Gachagua, the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader reportedly warned Kenyans to closely watch developments within the opposition, alleging that Sifuna could potentially be used as a tool to create divisions among leaders who are seeking to work together.
Gachagua has previously spoken about tensions within the Linda Mwananchi movement and said he had personally contacted Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, urging them to prevent disagreements among their supporters from weakening the movement.
He alleged that State operatives were attempting to infiltrate and divide the opposition, although he did not provide evidence to substantiate the claim.
According to the statement attributed to Gachagua, he further cautioned Kenyans against being carried away by the growing attention surrounding individual opposition figures while overlooking other leaders involved in mobilising support across the country.
He reportedly urged Kenyans to remain vigilant and carefully observe the political developments involving Sifuna and other opposition leaders as discussions over a possible united opposition continue ahead of 2027.
Gachagua's remarks come at a time when Sifuna has increasingly featured in opposition mobilisation activities, including those associated with Linda Mwananchi. Recent reporting has also documented consultations between different opposition figures as they consider how to work together ahead of the 2027 election.
However, the claims attributed to Gachagua remain political allegations, and there is no independently established evidence in the reports reviewed that President Ruto is using Sifuna to divide the opposition.
The political landscape remains fluid as opposition leaders continue discussions over unity, leadership and the structure of a possible coalition ahead of the 2027 General Election.
