Breaking News: Oburu Odinga to Miss Raila's Memorial as Sister Reveals Fresh Details About His Health

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Oburu Oginga will miss the memorial events marking the first anniversary of the death of his younger brother, former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, as he continues to recover from illness.

The latest update was shared by Raila and Oburu's sister, Akinyi Wenwa, during a candle-lighting ceremony held at Kang'o ka Jaramogi in Bondo, Siaya County, on Wednesday, October 14.

Addressing mourners gathered to remember the late opposition leader, Akinyi apologised on behalf of Oburu and explained that he had not yet received medical clearance to resume his public engagements.

She reassured Kenyans that the veteran politician was doing okay, although he was still feeling unwell.

According to Akinyi, Oburu had sent his apologies to those attending the commemorative activities but remained unable to participate because of his health condition.

His absence comes as the Odinga family, political leaders and supporters prepare to mark one year since Raila's death on October 15, 2025.

The first anniversary has attracted considerable public attention, with several leaders and supporters expected to gather in Bondo to honour the former Prime Minister's contribution to Kenya's political history.

Akinyi also reflected on the emotional pain of losing Raila, noting that a year had passed but the family was still struggling to come to terms with his death.

She observed that Raila's continued presence in the media, including recordings of his famous remarks, often makes it feel as though he is still around.

Oburu, who is Raila's elder brother and the current ODM party leader, had also missed the October 7 handover of Raila's mausoleum after doctors reportedly advised him to rest and limit his physical activities.

His continued absence has drawn attention as Kenyans gather to commemorate the life and legacy of one of the country's most influential political figures.
