US Launches “Large-Scale Strike” on Venezuela, Captures President Maduro, Trump Says

The United States has launched what former President Donald Trump describes as a “large-scale strike” in Venezuela, reportedly capturing President Nicolás Maduro and his wife. Trump said Maduro has been flown out of the country, though details remain scarce.

Venezuela’s government has demanded “immediate proof of life” for Maduro and his wife. Earlier, the government declared a state of national emergency, condemning what it described as “military aggression” by the United States.

Eyewitnesses in Caracas reported hearing multiple explosions across the city, with thick smoke rising from several areas. La Carlota, a military airfield, and the main military base Fuerte Tiuna were reportedly affected.

Nearby communities also experienced power outages, and there were unconfirmed reports of planes flying over the capital.

These events come amid heightened tensions between Washington and Caracas, following weeks of US military actions targeting speedboats in the Caribbean allegedly carrying drugs.

The US government has accused Maduro of being illegitimately elected and personally involved in drug trafficking.

Venezuelan authorities, on the other hand, have called recent US actions, including the seizure of sanctioned oil tankers, part of a campaign to remove Maduro from power and take control of the country’s oil resources.

Earlier this week, Maduro said he was open to talks with the US on drug trafficking and oil matters, stating in a televised interview that discussions could take place “wherever and whenever they want.”

He avoided commenting on Trump’s claim of a strike on a docking facility linked to drug boats, reportedly the first US land-based strike inside Venezuela carried out by the CIA.

Since September 2025, the US has launched at least 30 strikes on vessels allegedly involved in drug smuggling in the Caribbean and Pacific, resulting in more than 110 deaths.

The conflict has intensified over the past few months, culminating in the reported land strike and Maduro’s capture.

The situation is evolving rapidly, with the Venezuelan government mobilising its supporters and militias in response. International observers are closely monitoring developments as the potential consequences for regional stability remain uncertain.
