Advocate Joshua Kiptoo Questions Fred Matiang’i’s Political Skills Amid Gusii Opposition Tour

Advocate Joshua Kiptoo has delivered a pointed critique of former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i as opposition leaders intensify efforts to consolidate support in the Gusii region ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during an appearance on Morning Cafe on TV47, Kiptoo argued that Matiang’i lacks essential political skills necessary for competitive electoral politics.

According to him, this shortcoming could pose a significant challenge to the former CS’s broader ambitions within the opposition coalition.

Kiptoo noted that Matiang’i enjoys strong backing from Kisii Members of Parliament, which gives him a solid home base to launch his political journey.

However, he claimed that Matiang’i has adopted what he termed a restrained and gentlemanly approach to politics—an approach he believes may not be effective in Kenya’s often aggressive and high-stakes electoral environment.

While acknowledging Matiang’i’s reputation as a capable administrator during his tenure in key government ministries, Kiptoo questioned whether administrative efficiency can easily translate into electoral success.

“Matiang’i is not a politician, and this poses a problem for him,” Kiptoo stated, drawing a clear distinction between technocratic leadership and grassroots political mobilization.

His remarks come at a time when the United Opposition, including leaders allied to Matiang’i, has launched a multi-day tour of the Gusii region to rally support and solidify political alliances.

During the opening events of the tour, Matiang’i received endorsement from Abagusii community elders, who symbolically installed him as the spokesperson for the Abagusii people.

The endorsement is seen as a significant move aimed at consolidating regional backing within the opposition fold.

Kiptoo’s assessment highlights ongoing debates within opposition circles about leadership styles, public appeal, and strategic positioning in key political strongholds like Gusii.

As political alignments continue to shift, the ability of leaders like Matiang’i to transition from respected technocrats to effective electoral campaigners remains a subject of scrutiny.

With the 2027 elections drawing closer, the political mood in the Gusii region is expected to play a crucial role in shaping national coalition dynamics and opposition strategy.
