After more than a decade away from the classroom and a physically demanding 250-kilometre journey on foot from Bomet to Nairobi, Duncan Kibet’s determination to pursue higher education has finally borne fruit.
Mount Kenya University (MKU) has offered Kibet unconditional admission to study for a Bachelor of Education, stepping in to support a young man whose extraordinary effort touched hearts across the country.
Kibet completed high school 11 years ago but was unable to proceed to university due to persistent financial hardship. Refusing to give up on his dream of becoming a teacher, he recently embarked on a long-distance walk to raise funds for tuition—an act that quickly captured national attention and admiration.
Along the journey, Kenyans from all walks of life offered him food, words of encouragement, and small financial contributions. By the time he reached the capital, well-wishers had helped him raise approximately Sh12,000, transforming what began as a personal fundraising effort into a powerful story of resilience.
In a statement, MKU confirmed that it would not only admit Kibet without conditions but would also provide accommodation at the university hostels as he completes the remaining admission formalities.
