Gachagua Slams Ruto Over Efforts to Split Mount Kenya Region

Former Deputy President and Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader, Rigathi Gachagua, has accused President William Ruto of attempting to politically divide the Mount Kenya region into East and West.

Speaking on his social media accounts on Monday, March 9, Gachagua dismissed the move as an “exercise in futility,” claiming that President Ruto is using Deputy President Kithure Kindiki to advance the scheme.

“Mr William Ruto, your schemes to divide the mountain into West and East are an exercise in futility. Using ‘Soprano’ to divide the mountain is like using a razor blade to cut down a Mugumo tree,” Gachagua stated.

Gachagua criticized the approach, saying it fails to consider the complex social and cultural realities of Mount Kenya.

He further accused Kindiki of acting as the president’s agent in splitting the region, a strategy he believes is designed to weaken opposition voices and consolidate the ruling administration’s influence.

The criticism comes as the United Alternative government conducts political tours in Meru and Tharaka Nithi, moves seen as attempts to strengthen control in Mount Kenya East ahead of the 2027 elections.

Observers say Gachagua’s statements highlight growing political tension in the region and underscore Mount Kenya’s strategic importance in determining national electoral outcomes.
