KUCCPS Introduces Automated University Placement System for 2026/2027 Academic Year

The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has unveiled updated guidelines for university degree placements for the 2026/2027 academic year, aimed at enhancing fairness, efficiency, and transparency in allocating government-sponsored undergraduate slots.

The new framework was validated at a high-level forum at Kirinyaga University, which brought together vice-chancellors, college principals, and representatives from professional regulatory bodies. Following the forum, the KUCCPS Board approved implementation of the updated policies.

A key innovation is the full automation of cluster point calculations. Students no longer need to manually compute subject weights, as the KUCCPS online portal now calculates cluster points automatically using the four core subjects relevant to each degree program.

KUCCPS CEO Agnes Wahome explained that automation reduces errors and enhances transparency, allowing students to access previous years’ cut-off points to make informed course selections.

She emphasized, however, that meeting the minimum C+ grade requirement does not guarantee admission into competitive programs such as medicine, law, or engineering.

Students are encouraged to adopt a strategic approach, considering universities in less congested regions or alternative programs to improve placement chances.

Specialized technical and vocational courses typically have lower entry thresholds compared to top-tier programs in major cities.

Applicants can submit up to six choices through the KUCCPS portal using their KCSE index numbers. The first three choices should focus on the same degree across different universities to maintain career consistency, while choices four to six may include alternative programs.

If a student is not admitted to their top options, the system automatically moves them to the next available choice, ensuring no eligible student is left out.

The updates reflect KUCCPS’ commitment to a streamlined, data-driven, and equitable university placement system for Kenya’s future scholars.
