At least six people have reportedly lost their lives following a tragic road accident that occurred on Thursday morning along the busy Nairobi–Mombasa highway in the Manyatta area of Taita Taveta County.
According to reports from traffic authorities, the accident involved a passenger bus and a trailer that reportedly collided head-on, leaving several passengers seriously injured and others feared dead at the scene.
Reports indicate that the accident allegedly happened when the bus driver attempted to overtake another vehicle before the bus reportedly crashed into an oncoming trailer.
The impact is said to have caused severe damage to the right side of the bus before it veered off the road.
Coast regional traffic boss Asha Wario reportedly confirmed the tragic incident, stating that several injured passengers were rushed to Moi Referral Hospital in Voi where they are currently receiving treatment.
Authorities have since launched investigations to determine the exact cause of the accident as rescue teams responded quickly to the scene to assist the victims and clear the wreckage from the road.
The heartbreaking accident comes at a time when road safety concerns continue to rise across the country.
Traffic officials have revealed that more than 300 people reportedly died in road accidents nationwide within the past month alone, with many others sustaining serious injuries.
Reckless overtaking, speeding, and drunk driving are reportedly among the leading causes of these deadly crashes despite ongoing road safety campaigns by authorities.
The incident has once again raised concerns about safety along major highways in the country, especially the busy Nairobi–Mombasa highway which records heavy traffic daily.
As investigations continue, families of the victims are mourning their loved ones while survivors continue receiving treatment in hospital.
Authorities have urged drivers to exercise caution, follow traffic rules, and avoid dangerous overtaking to help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
