A quiet Madrid neighbourhood has been left in shock after a heartbreaking incident in which a 48-year-old mother died instantly after falling from the tenth floor of an apartment block while holding her three-year-old twins. The children survived the fall but remain in critical condition in two separate hospitals.
The horrific incident happened just after 9am on Saturday in Ciudad Lineal, a calm residential area approximately half an hour from Madrid’s city centre. Emergency responders rushed to the scene and found the woman, identified only as María, deceased on impact.
Both children were urgently transported to hospital. One twin is being treated at Madrid’s 12 de Octubre University Hospital, while the other was taken to Hospital Infantil Niño Jesús.
Medical teams have expressed deep concern over the condition of the twin who suffered the most severe injuries, warning that their survival is uncertain. No further medical updates have been released.
Just hours before the tragedy, María was seen purchasing gifts for her children, who had celebrated their birthday with family the previous day.
A spokesperson for Madrid’s emergency services confirmed the incident, stating:
“We can verify the death of a woman who fell from the tenth floor of a building on Ricardo Ortiz Street. Two three-year-old children have been transferred to different hospitals. National Police are leading the investigation, with assistance from local police and firefighters.”
An air ambulance was deployed to the scene, and authorities set up a large security cordon around the residential block. Investigators were seen entering and inspecting the ninth floor as part of the ongoing inquiry.
In a separate update, police confirmed that a 37-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault and remains in custody. West Yorkshire Police appealed to the public for any witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.
