Former Speaker Kenneth Marende Sparks Speculation Over Possible Vihiga Gubernatorial Bid

Former National Assembly Speaker Kenneth Marende, widely regarded as one of Kenya’s most decisive and respected parliamentary leaders, has ignited fresh political debate with remarks that hint at a possible return to frontline politics.

Marende, known for his firm handling of parliamentary proceedings and principled leadership, appears to be eyeing the top leadership position in Vihiga County.

In a video circulating widely on social media platform X, Marende was seen in a meeting with Vihiga County Woman Representative Beatrice Adagala. Shared by a local blogger, the footage has fueled speculation that Marende is preparing to contest the Vihiga gubernatorial seat in the next election.

During the gathering, he discussed the county’s challenges and emphasized the importance of inclusive leadership focused on development and good governance.

While he did not explicitly declare his candidacy, political observers interpret his remarks and body language as a strong indication of his ambitions.

If he formally enters the race, Marende would aim to succeed Governor Wilberforce Otichilo, who is currently serving the remainder of his term.

Marende’s renewed political activity follows his unsuccessful attempt to reclaim the National Assembly Speaker position in 2022, when he lost to Moses Wetangula in a closely contested parliamentary vote.

Despite that setback, Marende has remained a respected voice in national politics, praised for his integrity, legal expertise, and calm leadership style.

Should he join the Vihiga gubernatorial race, Marende is expected to attract significant attention. Supporters are likely to highlight his experience and proven track record, while critics may question how his national leadership background would translate to county-level governance.

The coming months will reveal whether Marende formally enters the race, but his recent activity has already stirred discussions about the future of leadership in Vihiga County.
