President Ruto Orders Installation of Speed Cameras Across Major Towns

President William Ruto has directed the Ministry of Transport and the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to install speed cameras in six major towns within the next month.

The directive, announced on Monday, March 2, at State House Nairobi, emphasizes integrating the cameras with instant fines to curb traffic offenses effectively.

The Head of State noted that the cameras would provide irrefutable evidence of traffic violations, eliminating disputes with offenders and reducing the need for court involvement.

“When you commit an offence, you will receive a fine on your phone instantly,” Ruto said, highlighting the plan as a measure to improve road safety and generate revenue directly from penalties.

NTSA previously announced plans to deploy over 1,000 traffic cameras across Kenyan highways under a public-private partnership with KCB Bank and Pesa Print Limited.

The cameras will be linked to a National Command and Control Centre, allowing instant notifications to offenders through SMS, along with integration into driver profiles and a merit-demerit system.

President Ruto stressed that the rollout is not complicated, noting prior experience with road cameras.

He emphasized that the new system will help streamline enforcement, prevent unnecessary court cases, and ensure faster collection of fines, ultimately enhancing traffic management nationwide.
