Tragic Truck Collision on Mombasa Road Leaves One Dead, Another Seriously Injured

A deadly road accident along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway in Machakos County has claimed the life of one driver and left another seriously injured.

The crash occurred near Green Park Estate in Athi River Subcounty on Monday, March 2, 2026, at around 5 a.m., involving two trailers moving from Mombasa towards Nairobi.

Police confirmed that the driver of one trailer was trapped in the cabin and burnt to ashes after both vehicles caught fire. The injured turnboy of the same trailer was rushed to hospital with serious injuries. Two occupants of the second trailer escaped unharmed.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with flames engulfing the vehicles immediately upon impact, leaving little chance for rescue. Local residents assisted in pulling the injured turnboy to safety and helped contain the fire while some youths vandalised the wreckage, stealing vehicle parts.

The accident caused severe traffic congestion on the busy highway, prompting police to manage traffic and divert motorists to a single lane. The County Government of Machakos fire brigade worked to extinguish the fire, with one trailer cabin still burning at press time.

Authorities are continuing efforts to clear the wreckage and investigate the cause of the collision. Police have appealed for caution along the highway, especially during early morning hours, as road safety remains a pressing concern.
