Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has announced the closure of the Social Health Authority (SHA) Provider Portal as the government moves healthcare facilities to a new digital system known as the SHA Health Management Information System (SHA-HMIS).
According to Duale, the existing SHA Provider Portal was scheduled to be shut down at midnight on September 30, 2026, with healthcare facilities required to transition to the new system.
The new system is expected to handle key processes including patient verification, electronic claims management and digital authentication of healthcare providers as part of the government's wider digital transformation of the health sector.
Duale has warned health facilities that fail to complete the transition that they risk losing access to the SHA system. Public hospitals at Levels 2, 3 and 4 had already made significant progress in migrating, while private and faith-based facilities were also required to complete the process within the set deadline.
The transition, however, does not mean that SHA itself is being abolished. Instead, the government is replacing the existing provider portal with the new SHA-HMIS as part of efforts to create a more integrated digital healthcare system.
The Ministry of Health says the new system is intended to improve efficiency, transparency and accountability while helping to speed up claims processing and reduce fraud.
The government had earlier assured healthcare providers that the migration would be implemented in phases and that measures would be put in place to avoid disruption of healthcare services during the transition.
The development comes as the government continues implementing major reforms in Kenya's healthcare sector under the Universal Health Coverage programme.
