A 66-year-old Wisconsin man has been arrested after police accused him of hitting and killing a pedestrian before allegedly switching seats with his wife and leaving the scene.
James Harvey was charged with hit-and-run involving death following a crash in St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin, that claimed the life of 65-year-old Roger Peterson, according to police and court documents.
Investigators said Peterson was attempting to cross Highway 8 when he was struck by a blue Dodge Journey SUV. Police later traced the vehicle to Harvey's family.
According to the criminal complaint, Harvey was allegedly driving despite not having a valid driver's license. His wife told investigators that she heard a sound and realized the vehicle may have struck a person.
Police allege that Harvey then stopped the vehicle and instructed his wife to take over the driving. She reportedly drove using back roads before the couple later switched seats again.
Investigators eventually located the SUV at the couple's home. Police said the vehicle had significant damage to its front driver's side and that evidence was found on the damaged windshield.
Authorities also alleged that there appeared to have been an attempt to conceal the vehicle and potentially hide evidence.
Harvey's wife cooperated with investigators and was not charged in connection with the case. She reportedly told police that the couple returned home after the incident and had dinner.
Harvey remains in custody at the Polk County Jail and was scheduled to make his first court appearance on Wednesday.
The allegations against Harvey have not been proven in court, and he is presumed innocent unless found guilty.
